This week's movie marathon features films that are enchantingly quirky and fun. Watching films is all about suspending your disbelief and just going with it. These movies really push that envelope; and it works.
1. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Stanley Kubrick, 1964)
You're never sure if you should be laughing or feeling a sense of guilt; it's brilliant. The main character's innocence, despite his important role, fits perfectly in this satire-filled story.
2. Living in Oblivion (Tom DiCillo, 1995)
I admit, this might not be everyone's cup of tea. It's a film about filmmaking; breaking down that third wall and seeing how low budget films are really done. We actually watched this in film school, and it demystified the glamour of making movies with the budget we had. I appreciated it's honesty; a real ode to independent filmmaking.
3. I Heart Huckabees (David O. Russell, 2004)
A movie that truly gets you thinking. Everything, from "did they just do that?" to "what is the meaning of the universe?"; this film really makes you question. But it's one of those movies that you are so happy to re-watch, and you'll see it a different way every time.
4. Micmacs à tire-larigot (Jean-Pierre Jeunet, 2009)
If you liked Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, you'll like this film. The same fun and fast-passed story that, in the end, makes you really happy. You'll be guaranteed to fall in love with one of these silly characters.
5. Submarine (Richard Ayoade, 2010)
A coming-of-age story with a twist; but who really came of age in a traditional way? This quirky love story will definitely delight you.
6. Moonrise Kingdom (Wes Anderson, 2012)
Of course a Wes Anderson film would make this list, and it was hard to choose which one. He is a master at creating complete environment, from the smallest detail like the symmetrical frames decorating a house on a set. This movie just made me smile, it's such a lovely story of adventure and friendship.
That's it for this week's Monday Movie Marathon. I hope these movies make you smile as much as they do for me; and perhaps spike some inspiration from an unusual angle.
